The enthusiasm is declining, but then it's been quite a hot week. I added the second layer to my back-pack and didn't waste any rods this time. I just sanded the edge of some off-cuts instead and they look pretty decent, but not something I'll be doing much. It actually now slots into the back of the smaller Ghaz quite nicely. As I wait for components to dry, I started on the third set of legs and this is where I think two is probably the ideal, as making a |
third seemed tedious. Even though I made my Tau Battlesuits in three's, I think there is too much detail in these. With more time on my hand and the weather looking good, it may be time to start the second part of shoveling slate after completing the first part back in June.

Sometimes it's worth planning ahead, but in the end it worked out just fine with none at all. For once I was patient to let the glue dry and bond so the arms on my firt Ghaz was firm. Trying to make a way to slot the upper body to the legs, I had to carve and remodel the bottom of the body and normally would probably break the arms off at least once or twice. However I wish I stuck the legs a little more out on the side of the claw. At least the first Ghaz fits together loosley enough to check everything works out and not too fiddly glueing together once it was painted. Knowing what to do however helped out on mounting the second one together without worry about the arms. With this one I did have to adjust one feet to angle it more out towards where he was looking at and also make him more stable. The backpack, once again lack of planning as it didn't fit either of them... and I still not worked out a good way to get the rods to bend.
now was whether to glue the body to the legs now or later. As I didn't plan the plastic pieces to fit together, I need to resort to green stuff and then glue plastic pieces to stablise the two together. The problem comes when I want to paint it and want to do details in the hard to reach areas like the knee pads. So while pondering this decision, I made picked the base and gently glued the two set of feets. I also made the second claw and still forgot to take photos. Unlike the first, the lower three claws are similiar, in that I used the first as a template for the other two. My original was made independantly so were quite different. Also while waiting the reinforced arm to dry as it was loose, I started planning the rear and likely have the opportunity to make it slot in without having to glue directly onto the back.
The rod I decided to use for the cannon seemed too big to start with, but once completed looked small on the arm of this Ghaz. So I decided to make another slightly larger version. Although it was marginly larger, it was definately a better fit. It also meant that I wanted to re-do the legs too. As it was going to be easy to break the legs apart for a different pose, I decided to make another set, but this time with slightly thicker plastic card for the claws that made the feet look bigger. I also added bulkier knee pads and luckily maintained the same height as this model was getting too tall. Overall I was much more satisfied with the outcome.
I've only come to realise that I started the Ork face with a blob and then poked holes for the eyes and mouth... but I never had a nose! So although barely visible, I added a small bit of green stuff to make a nose protude from the face. I even attempted to do some fangs and teeth. I've not got around to checking all my other creations, but at least two of the three Ork Krew head's I made didn't have a nose. I also realised that after 11 years of not having an eye test and now with new glassess, I still try and sculpt these small things while wearing them when I probably be able to see better without them!
As I had three arches, I decided to make three Ghaz at the same time. It did making mixing the greenstuff easier rather than mixing just enough for a small single head. I ended up still having a small amount left over and couldn't even make a spare skull. So three Ghaz heads, each bigger than the previous.
With the mounting amount of scrap, I thought it may be worth trying to utilise some again. That meant turning my attention back to the Orks. Although I just recently went to a CapCon with the family, I had recently been looking at latest version of Ghazghkull and all the different style he's been painted in. Hence I was thinking of doing various of these and calling it the Ghaz Faz or GhazCon. Rather than dive right in, I thought I'd try a concept one first. Luckily I still have an old Ork character pack for reference.
