Concepts to Completion
Snoztfang's Bigger Tanker
The big tanker was inspired by many post apocalypse films including the one in Mad Max (2015) and various other images. However I didn't want to follow the Mad Max oil tanker, hence more freedom to do what I wanted. I'm not sure if there was an image that inspired the cabin with its heavy armour and top mounted cannon. The oil tanker was originally not big enough due to lack of usable components. Every time I went shopping, I was on the hunt for something that would replace it. Eventually I found something in the party section of a Hobby Shop. Even the final version still felt a bit lacking in comparison with some of the photos I was trying to base this one on. As this was the second version and I was past the thrill of the convoy, I didn't bother trying to mount weapons or anything on top.
Ork Lootas |
~Sept 2015 & Aug 2016
|
The Ork Lootas was to provide a bit of variety to the Orks with the Plasma Cannon on its shoulder. However these were a few hence I had to modify the standard Ork models instead, though forced to make them arms. The thin legs did not help the situation either, however the ones with broken legs were mended and used for these Ork Lootas. I didn't make many and filled the gaps with various other modified Orks. I'm not sure why I didn't do Ork Burna Boyz nor the Ork Mek at the time. It didn't take many before I stopped as bending the thin pipes and making the frame to mount the weapon got a bit tiresome.
Stompa Head |
~August 2016
|
I can't even remember which year I got the 40K Ork Stompa for Father's day bought by my wife on behalf of my son. The concept was to make this a toweing structure for my Epic Orks like Skull Mountain. This has been an idea for many years and only the head have been completed. I reluctantly decorated the inside too with sections of the head held together by magnets. Features that will be hard to live by if I ever attempt the rest of the Stompa.
Tau Battlesuit |
~September 2016
|
User - Apocolocyntosis was the one who first made the concept using HIPS (High Impact Styrene sheets) that made it look possible. I used left over cut-off plastic from various other projects in various thickness. Once the first was made, it was the start of a very long project. The first was made to stand without support and subsequent models were perfected and even got me to write up a conversion guide. The guide was also for my own notes so that when I took a long break in between, it would remind me how I made it. I took different approachs to making these, sometimes doing one or two models at a time, while other times I did as much as nine. There were various pros and cons with each and I never decided which approach was better.
Dread Mob Containers |
~Nov 2016
|
The Shipping Containers have always been something I wanted to make and was originally going to use V-grove plastic sheets that proved too expensive. Luckily it was easy enough to make using alternative flat pieces of plastic. My son's Lego bricks were the perfect size to plan the layout and the whole idea was to display the Dread Mob and save me some display space, but this didn't actually save much space. I came across a coffee shop at a retail park that was housed inside a modified shipping container. It was this that sparked the idea of making some of them open and transforming one into a workshop. I even made one with the door ajar with a barely visible Tardis inside.
Three Falls |
~Dec 2016
|
High Force Waterfall - England and Tengenungan Waterfall - Indonesia were the two images I based my Three Falls Waterfall. I had a River/Waterfall Learning Kit by Woodland Scenics with small amount of realistic water and water effect. As it would be sensible to use it all rather than open the containers and then later find it all dried out, I had to plan to use it all. Hence the small river section at the top and the pool in the middle. As I didn't want to make multiple river sections, I had the final water fall into a chasm. The experience was a mess and I wish I had smaller samples to make smaller trial pieces. I had the water effect leaking all over my table top. There was definitely still room for improvement, although I don't think I'd ever tackle anything like this again.
Ork Bikers |
~Jan 2017
|
The Chopper Motobikes and a model made by Tokkutai was the inspiration for the first Ork biker I made. However there was a lot of Ork bikers that inspired the others including images based on the bike from Akira animated film, Tron and I believe the new era of Ork Bikers was also released by Games Workshop around this time.
Pod Racer |
~March 2017
|
I believe that others have made 40K Pod Racers for Orks, but they weren't the reason I made these. The idea started with wanting an Ork holding onto some handle bars and moving so fast that his whole body was pulled up into the air. This is probably not an original idea either and someone possibly did something similar, but I can't remember where from. I based these off pictures from the Star Wars movie. For copyright reasons, I haven't put up the concept photos I used. To make the lightning effect on the front, I purchased two spools of 26 metres of coloured wire just to use 4cm.
Central Cavern Column |
~June 2017
|
I believe the image from Sarlsbad Caverns National Park inspired the next piece. I had a massive race track carved out below the planned Ork City and needed something to hold it up. However I only made around two or three pieces that was sufficient, but potentially would not likely be enough in reality.
Racetrack Podium |
~July 2017
|
With the race track carved out, I decided I needed a Podium to house an Ork Boss and potentially a chain gun to shoot down any cheaters. After a search for various images, I decided upon this photo taken at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as reference. Trying to stick metal mesh with plastic was not an easy task on this little project.
